Step 1: Understand the Basics of CPR and When to Use It

Step 1 is simple but powerful: understand what CPR is, why it matters, and when to use it with the children and infants in your life. Once this picture is clear, the hands-on practice feels less scary and much more purposeful.

CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is an emergency skill you use when a person's heart or breathing has stopped or is not effective. The goal is to keep blood and oxygen moving through the body until medical help arrives. For families, that often means acting during sudden events at home, in the car, or on the playground.

For parents and caregivers, common situations that call for CPR include:

A child or infant is unresponsive and not breathing normally after choking, a fall, or a near-drowning.
A known medical condition, such as heart disease or a seizure disorder, is followed by collapse and no normal breathing.
A possible overdose or poisoning leads to unresponsiveness and shallow or absent breathing.

When in doubt, you check for responsiveness and normal breathing. If there is no response and no normal breathing, you start CPR and call for emergency help. Acting early gives the child or infant a better chance while professionals are on the way.

Families also need to know that CPR is not the same for everyone. The basics stay the same-push on the chest, give rescue breaths if trained, and keep going-but the way you do those actions changes with age and size.

Adult CPR: Uses two hands on the center of the chest with deeper compressions. This is for teens and adults whose bodies are fully developed.
Child CPR: Uses one or two hands on the chest, depending on the child's size. Compressions are strong but more controlled than for adults.
Infant CPR: Uses two fingers on the breastbone, just below the nipple line. Compressions are smaller and gentler, and head positioning for breaths is different to protect the airway.

1. Ensure the scene is safe

Before you touch the child or infant, you pause and scan for danger. Look for traffic, fire, loose wires, broken glass, or aggressive behavior nearby. Your safety protects the person who needs help, because it means you can stay and continue care.

In practice sessions, we encourage parents to physically look left, right, and around, even when the room is calm. That simple habit builds muscle memory, so in a crisis your eyes start working before your hands do.

2. Check responsiveness

Once the area is safe, you check how the child or infant responds. For a child, tap their shoulder and speak loudly. For an infant, tap the bottom of the foot and call their name or make a firm sound.

You watch for any clear reaction: movement, sound, or normal breathing. Short, gasping breaths do not count as normal. During practice, use the same words and motions each time. A consistent routine lowers panic and speeds up your decision-making.

3. Call for help

If there is no response, you move quickly to get more help. Shout for someone nearby to call emergency services and bring an AED if one is available. If you are alone with a child, you usually call first. If you are alone with an infant and there is no known heart condition, you often give a short period of care before calling.

CPR classes walk through these timing differences so you are not trying to guess under pressure. Practicing short phrases like "You, call 9-1-1 and get an AED" trains your voice to stay clear and direct.

4. Start chest compressions

With help on the way, you go straight to the chest. For a child, place one or two hands in the center of the chest. For an infant, place two fingers on the breastbone just below the nipple line. You push straight down and let the chest rise fully between compressions.

The exact depth and pace are taught during class, but the rhythm matters most. In training, we often use a steady beat or song to teach that pace. Repeating the same beat each time you practice builds a rhythm your body remembers, even if your mind feels scared.

5. Provide rescue breaths if trained

If you are trained and willing, you add rescue breaths. After a set of compressions, you open the airway, seal your mouth over the child's mouth (and nose for an infant), and give gentle breaths just until the chest rises. Then you return to compressions.

Hands-on practice focuses on small details that reduce stress later: head position, how hard to breathe, and how to count your cycles. If you are not trained or do not feel comfortable giving breaths, hands-only CPR still protects blood flow until advanced care arrives.
